Bob went to Fox Chase Cancer Center on Monday, May 1, 2006 to have his right kidney removed. He had a fever, was in pain and we were advised upon his being admitted to the hospital that his blood was no longer clotting. We were scared, but neither said anything to one another. What was suppose to be a roughly 4 hour procedure turned into an almost 8 hour procedure. Bob needed 3 blood transfusions. He also had his right adreanal gland removed as well as some other areas that the cancer may have spread into. The doctor thought that he had gotten "it all" and we would know for sure once the biopsies returned later in the week. Bob was in a lot of pain and spent that first night in the ICU on a breathing machine. By morning, they removed the tube and he was talking "work" with his boss who came in early to visit him. (that was how Bob was) He was taken to a regular room to recover. He was in the hospital five days. One of the worse parts for him was trying to walk after laying on one side for all those hours for the surgery. The nerve on the left side was injured, I guess and that caused him to have trouble walking. We received the news by Friday of that week that all the tissue taken from his body was "clean"...and we exhaled a sigh of relief. Bob did it, he got through the surgery, was recovering...and all the cancer was gone. By Saturday morning, he was released and heading home. (I stayed in Phila the entire week at an apartment that the families of patients can rent through Fox Chase, it was approx. three blocks away) As soon as Bob got in the door, I turned my back and he was checking his blackberry for work messages! He was extremely dedicated.
